Digital Cameras

A picture can say a thousand words. But what if you can take the same picture a thousand times? And yet not feel the pinch of developing or printing it to find out the result. It is an understatement to say that digital cameras have revolutionized the way pictures are taken, printed and stored. What was a specialized vocation has now become a toy in the hands of every person.

The beginning of a digital camera probably began when Fuji had a camera with a memory card. However Kodak began the commercial production of digital cameras in the early 90s, which at that time was an expensive affair. As time and technology went ahead, the cost has come down, but the number of features has gone up.

For everyday use and capturing a precious moment without getting into the finer nuances, a digital camera is the best option. It is considered a blasphemy if you are not on the digital camera express highway. If you do not own a digital camera until now, then it can't be a better time to own one.

Perhaps the best feature of a digital camera is that one can review a picture taken within seconds. If it is not good, then just hit delete. A feature probably all of us want to use in every fouled moment of life. But with so many buttons and features, are they user-friendly? Yes very much so. The higher the mega-pixel count, the better the quality and clarity.

Every digital camera comes with both digital and optical zoom. For a lay person, digital zoom is mostly like using design software like Adobe or Corel - implied it magnifies the image by pixels. However the image can lose its clarity by the zooming in digital mode. On the other hand optical zoom is more a photographer's tool, where a lens magnifies the image. It enhances the clarity and visibility. Having a good optical zoom is more useful for taking great out door shots.

Apart from the auto, zoom, red eye, and the regular features of any camera, digital cameras' best ability is tested in using it in sepia mode, and in black and white. The tones and textures bring out the old look feeling and yet clarity and sharpness is not lost at all.

Imagine this. Taking a picture for the wedding or taking a family portrait was a family affair two decades ago. Now it has become an everyday event. Using a digital camera almost everywhere has become the norm.

Though there are ordinary digital cameras for the amateur, digital SLRs have revolutionized the back end professional photography. Digital SLRs are a professional photographers' delight. Using a digital SLR might seem easy, but without sound technical knowledge of photography, one cannot do full justice to it. Most of these also have the option of using a video camera albeit for a couple of minutes. However, they are best at taking photos rather than as a video camera.

There are many storage devices used in a digital camera. Flash drives, memory sticks, card reading devices, or the good old CD or floppy disk. If you are not well versed using any of these devices to upload your images, then you might stick to the traditional way of uploading through the cable provided.

Digital cameras are more like an empty slate or a canvas. It depends on whether we want to take a picture-perfect poster or a funny family moment. Then go on again and again. With out having to bother about developing or printing. Sharing images from these are really a click away. Most cameras support the basic saving formats like JPEG and TIFF, which can be stored, saved and sent to almost any type of computer.

It is easy to be swayed by the offers companies and stores give on digital camera and its accessories. Be sure on how you intend to use it and the purpose behind getting one. As technology leaps forward every fortnight, it might be difficult catching up with it. So be prepared and choose the one that you are comfortable in handling, understanding and maintaining. Every person who uses it could turn out to be a decent photographer, with the push of a button. Not many can do that with words right?
